Ingredients:

  • 200g wholemeal flour
  • 200g plain flour
  • 50g oats
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 80g chopped dates
  • 300ml buttermilk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan)/400°F/gas mark 6. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the wholemeal flour, plain flour, oats, cocoa powder, baking powder, and bicarbonate of soda.
  3. Stir in the chopped dates.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the honey and buttermilk. 
  5. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Shape into a round loaf and place on the prepared baking tray.
  7. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.
  9. Leave to cool on a wire rack.
